3-Ring Circus: Live at the Palace – October 21, 1995 catches the trio of late frontman/guitarist/songwriter Bradley Nowell, bassist Eric Wilson and drummer Bud Gaugh in top form before a packed house at the legendary Palace in Hollywood, CA. Sublime tears through 27 songs, including their hits “Date Rape,” “Badfish,” and “40 Oz To Freedom,” as well as covers of classic songs that reflect the band’s broad stylistic range of influences (“54-46 Was My Number” by Toots & the Maytals, “House of Suffering” by Bad Brains and the Grateful Dead’s “Scarlet Begonias”). More than 78 minutes of the band’s performance and on-stage antics are on full display in a sold-out setting, with remastered and remixed multi-source live audio culled from the original master tapes.

In October of 1995, Sublime was riding the momentum of a year that saw them sign a record deal with MCA Records’ subsidiary Gasoline Alley, as well as heavy rotation on KROQ for their single “Date Rape,” originally released on the band’s brilliant 1992 Skunk Records album, 40 oz. to Freedom (now nearly 3X platinum). The Long Beach trio had also just come off of a headlining slot on that summer’s Warped Tour—the first ever edition of that perennial trek—from which Sublime were subsequently booted from the East Coast leg for their infamously chaotic debauchery (before being asked back). With a surprise runaway local hit from an album the band had been selling for three years from the trunks of their cars, Sublime and its innovative musical fusion and subcultural voice were on their way to becoming an underground classic. Sublime’s 1995 “3-Ring Circus” tour also featured support from Chicago’s renowned schizophrenic street denizen and anti-hero, the late Wesley Willis, and his Fiasco Band; Brooklyn’s hip-hop ensemble Lordz of Brooklyn; and a young group of unknown adolescents from “the Valley” called Incubus.

Minutes after inducting Rush into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame late last night at L.A.’s Nokia Theatre, Dave Grohl stood outside his dressing room, still wearing the vintage white kimono he sported as the Foo Fighters nailed ”Overture.” “It’s terrifying to play your favorite song in front of your favorite band,” he said. “It’s one thing to sit in the basement to sit in the basement and woodshed 2112, and it’s another to stand in front of Rush in a fucking kimono and a wig. Tonight was one of the most special nights of my life.”

Grohl’s biggest moment? “I met Neil Peart for the first time at rehearsal. This man was as influential to me as any religion. And he said, ‘So nice to meet you, can I make you a coffee?’ And he made me a coffee. Later on that night, I went to dinner and had a couple glasses of wine and I started fucking crying, because my hero made me a coffee.”

Rush (And Fans) Fight the Power at the 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction

It was just one emotional backstage moment during last night’s ceremony, where Rush, Heart, Randy Newman, Public Enemy, Donna Summer, Lou Adler and Quincy Jones were inducted. “When we first found out, I don’t think it really dawned on me what it meant,” Rush’s Geddy Lee told Rolling Stone. “And in the days building up to this tonight, I’ve started reflecting on our lives and what this actually does mean in the context of music, popular music.”

“It was magical,” said former Heart guitarist Roger Fisher, tears filling his eyes after reuniting with the band after his departure in 1980. “It was a very healing moment, and just created closure for all the pain and negativity in the past.”

The performers paying tribute took the night seriously as the inductees; before honoring Albert King, Gary Clark Jr. stood in the stairwell with his unplugged Epiphone, playing blues licks and obsessively tuning; DMC practiced his rap for the “Crossroads” finale in a communal green room (no one complained); Mike McCready and Jerry Cantrell carefully worked out the guitar fingering for their set with Heart. Before the show, as audience guests like Jack Nicholson and Robbie Robertson hung out, Jackson Browne stood stage-side by a guitar rack. “I’m missing the social part of the evening, but I don’t want to have two seconds to get ready,” he said.

The night was also a chance for rock stars to be fans. John Mayer, who inducted King, rushed out in the middle of the ceremony to catch a red-eye to New York to rehearse for New Orelans Jazz Fest, but not before stopping in the hallway to introduce himself to Tom Morello. “I’m a huge fan,” Mayer said. “I just bought a whammy pedal,” The two talked guitars for a few minutes. “You made a pedal an instrument, very few people can do that,” said Mayer. “Jimi Hendrix. You claimed the whammy. That’s huge, to claim an entire effect pedal.” Morello grinned.

Photos: Live at the 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction

As Mayer stepped into his Escalade, he was still blown away by Rush’s fans, who cheered the band for several minutes when Hall of Fame Chairman Jann S. Wenner’s mentioned the a “band from Toronto.” “Man, I want Rush fans to come to my shows now, that is some fandom,” Mayer told Rolling Stone. “If you’re a Rush fan, you should get in any show free.”

Even Rush were surprised by their fan turnout. “They went nuts,” said Geddy Lee backstage. “We were totally surprised. I had no idea our fans would dominate the crowd tonight.”

They certainly got some surprises; Alex Lifeson’s three-minute-long speech was comprised of only the words “blah, blah, blah” – maybe a comment on Rush only being inducted now after being eligible since 1998. “That’s performance art right there,” Morello said, cracking up while watching the speech on a backstage monitor next to Chuck D, who added, “Understood. He said it all right there.”

What was Lifeson trying to say in his speech? The band laughed off the question in our interview. “Enough words preceded it,” Lifeson said.

“God only knows,” said Lee. “We’re done here. I’ve got some serious drinking to do.”

Flavor Flav had another memorable speech, rambling for several minutes as Chuck D urged him to quit and the audience grew weary. “Being kind of the leader of a group for 26 years, you sometimes have to be a youth counselor, or camp counselor,” said Chuck D. “Flavor is Flavor because of many different reasons, he brings it out onstage, and it’s about how to taper that, and he went outside of the taper. But this is the biggest day of his rock & roll life.”

The end of each ceremony always raises the question: who will be inducted next year? One strong possibility is Nirvana, who will be eligible – their first single, “Love Buzz,” was released in 1988. “Wow, I didn’t even know that,” said Grohl. “Interesting. Well, hopefully they make us wait as long as Rush did, because did you see all their fucking fans out there tonight?”

But Hollywood royalty was on hand to honor both Mr. Newman and Public Enemy here on Thursday night, as both acts were inducted into the Hall of Fame, a reflection of the huge growth in hip-hop’s popularity and influence over the last two decades and of the rapidly growing musical diversity in the hall.

“We represent the hip-hop community that also deserves recognition today,” said Chuck D., one of Public Enemy’s founders. The group is only the fourth hip-hop act to make it into the hall, but Chuck D. predicted that there would be more soon, citing other influential rappers like L L Cool J and Salt-n-Pepa. “Many of them you will see here in the next 10 years,” he said.

Musicians become eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25 years after the release of their first album or single.

The show’s return to Los Angeles was part of a strategy to make the hall induction ceremony more accessible to the public, which has also involved holding it in larger auditoriums in recent years. In coming years it may rotate among New York, Cleveland (site of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum) and Los Angeles, officials said.

In keeping with the pomp that people have come to expect at this city’s award shows, performers filed along the red carpet (sometimes with the help of an escort to fend off the shrieking fans) into the 7,100-seat Nokia Theater. There, a capacity crowd was treated to performers from different epochs and musical genres playing together onstage, a hallmark of Hall of Fame induction ceremonies.

Usher did his best Michael Jackson impression as a tribute to the producer Quincy Jones, who was inducted this year. Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins of the Foo Fightersintroduced Rush, which was inducted and performed with them onstage. Don Henley, Tom Petty and John Fogerty all played with Mr. Newman.

Aside from Public Enemy, all of the eight inductees had recorded some of their greatest successes by the 1970s, if not earlier. Heart, trailblazers for women in rock music, and the producer Lou Adler were inducted, while the queen of disco, Donna Summer, and the blues guitar legend Albert King were posthumously honored.

Mr. Newman, 69, joked about the age of many of the performers, including himself.

After being snubbed for 20 years, he said, “I did think I was going to have to die and I’d be watching from below with my relatives.” He played a song called “I’m Dead (But I Don’t Know It),” about old musicians with gray hair who won’t retire “clogging the stage.”

Mr. Jones, already the recipient of 27 Grammys over the course of a career that has paired him with legends from Ray Charles to Michael Jackson, also noted how long it had taken him to get in. “I didn’t want to get into the Hall of Fame too early, so we waited a while,” he said.

As the night went on, the mood continued to lighten. Flavor Flav of Public Enemy no doubt assumed he had given the longest, most haphazard speech when he went on about his children and the clock he wears around his neck (among other subjects) until even his band mate, Chuck D., was giving him wrap-it-up signals on the stage.

“I only get to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame one time in my life,” Flavor Flav said. “I’m enjoying this.”

Not to be outdone, Alex Lifeson, Rush’s singer and guitarist, then gave an acceptance speech in which he repeated “blah blah” over and over for several minutes while aggressively gesticulating, leaving the crowd in hysterics.

LOS ANGELES — Surprise presenter Oprah Winfrey gave Quincy Jones a huge hug. Jack Nicholson, Herb Alpert and a tearful Michelle Phillips huddled at Lou Adler’s table. Randy Newman got big laughs. And everyone rocked out to Public Enemy’s raucous set.

But the night belonged to Rush, the Canadian prog-rock trio that’s been waiting for an invitation since 1998.

They arrived as the headliner. The band drew deafening applause at Thursday’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in the Nokia Theatre.

Rush’s entry into the elite institution was also a people’s choice award. For the first time, fans were invited to cast votes (with their votes constituting a single ballot among the 500-plus submitted by artists, historians and music industry professionals), and Rush won handily.

Their fans packed the house, chanting for their heroes from the evening’s outset, then exploding into cheers when the band finally took the stage for a paint-peeling performance of Tom Sawyer and The Spirit of Radio.

Dave Grohl, who rattled off every Rush album title in chronological order, inducted the musicians, saying, “From day one, the band built its following the right way. No hype, no (baloney), they did it from the ground up without any help from the mainstream press …Their influence is undeniable and their devoted fan base is only rivaled by the Grateful Dead. Look at you people, all of you people, right here! And their legacy is that of a band that stayed true to themselves no matter how uncool they may have seemed to anyone.”

Drummer Neil Peart said, “We’ve been saying for a long time, years, that this wasn’t a big deal. Turns out, it kind of is.”

And in a nod to the role ardent fans played in paving Rush’s path to the hall, singer/bassist Geddy Lee thanked “the most passionate, incredible fan base around the globe …for not only supporting and encouraging our musical progress over the years, but for the insistence of their voices, which has most certainly led us to this evening.”

The ceremony, in L.A. for the first time since Cream and The Doors were inducted in 1993, will be broadcast May 18 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO.

Artists become eligible 25 years after the release of their first record. Public Enemy entered the hall in its first year of eligibility, but the others have been cooling their heels. Heart, on the ballot the past two years, has been eligible since 2001. First-time nominee Albert King, who died in 1992, was eligible in 1987. Donna Summer, considered in five of the past six years, was eligible in 1999. And Randy Newman, an early rounder in 2005, was eligible in 1990.

The Ahmet Ertegun Award for non-performers went to producers Lou Adler and Quincy Jones.

A rundown of the evening:

Randy Newman, joined by John Fogerty, Jackson Browne and Tom Petty, opened the show with a performance of I Love L.A.

Presenter Don Henley of the Eagles called the singer/songwriter’s induction “shamefully overdue” and chided the “peculiar, perplexing organization” for delaying his entry 20 years.

Noting that Newman was nominated 15 times before snagging an Oscar, Henley said, “He’s a man who’s accustomed to waiting.”

Henley praised Newman’s “wonderful wry self-effacing wit,” but said, “there’s so much more to Randy’s work” than his best-known tunes, I Love L.A. and Short People.

He lauded his love songs, satirical hits and said, “No one has written more bravely about racism, politics and war.”

Newman confessed that he expected to be inducted 20 years ago when there was “a flurry of activity” in his career. When it didn’t happen, “I did think I was going to have to die and I’d have to watch from below with my relatives.”

He added, “I always wanted to be respected by musicians …This night means a great deal to me.”

He returned to the piano to perform I Think It’s Going to Rain Today and, accompanied by Henley, the rowdy and humorous I’m Dead But I Don’t Know It.

Public Enemy was introduced by Spike Lee, who wore a Mookie’s pizza shirt from his Do the Right Thing film, which showcased the group’s anthem Fight the Power. Harry Belafonte also spoke, calling Public Enemy “the gatekeepers of the truth.”

Flavor Flav rambled at length, humorously and incoherently, thanking partner Chuck D “for all the years of writing good records. You’ve been the motor, man.”

Chuck D gave a gracious speech and argued for hip-hop’s inclusion in the hall. “For those thinking right now, ‘There goes the musical neighborhood,’ let us not forget we all come from the damn blues.”

The group blasted a medley of Bring the Noise, 911 Is a Joke and Fight the Power.

Heart’s heart resided “in the singular synergy in the sisterhood of Ann and Nancy Wilson,” said Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell, who inducted the Seattle band that shot to stardom long before grunge arrived. “They blasted down many sexist barriers in front of them …Heart was important to us, not just as musicians, but as proof that Seattle could produce something beautiful and rocking.”

Nancy told the audience, “For us, music is the real church. It’s a life calling … We’re not finished rocking just yet. We say, turn it up.”

Ann added, “When I leave this earth, I will look back with love because I got the chance to sing. I never, ever take it for granted.”

The pair joined the rest of the band for Crazy on You, Dreamboat Annie andBarracuda.

Donna Summer, who died last year, was inducted by an enthusiastic Kelly Rowland, who recalled the sensual pull of the disco queen’s Love to Love You Baby.

“I’m pretty sure that me and a lot of you were made to that record,” she said.

Summer’s husband Bruce Sudano reflected on the singer’s resistance to proposals that she record a standards album. “She wanted to create something new at all times,” he said.

Jennifer Hudson, in a gold, clingy pantsuit, sang Bad Girls and Last Dance as Flavor Flav danced with Summer’s daughters in front of the stage.

Albert King’s guitar playing was “muscular, intense,” said John Mayer, inducting the late blues master. “He’s why the guitar face was invented …Albert King is the very definition of a cool cat. He’s alive in the music of the guitar players he continues to inspire.”

Quincy Jones was inducted by an unexpected celebrity, Oprah Winfrey, whom the producer cast in The Color Purple after seeing her local Chicago talk show.In honor of King, guitar sensation Gary Clark Jr. played Oh Pretty Woman and, with Booker T. Jones and Mayer joining him, Born Under a Bad Sign.

“He discovered me for The Color Purple and it changed the trajectory of my life,” Winfrey said. “I never wanted anything in my life more than I wanted to be in The Color Purple.”

She praised his commitment to music and philanthropy.

“You’re a marvel and everyone knows it,” she said. “You’re a genius. You have the most generous soul of anybody I know on earth. We treasure you. We cherish you. We love you.

“When you work with Quincy Jones, you feel love and you are loved unconditionally. Everyone around him feels his light. He lives life completely on his terms.”

Jones spoke at length about his background, his mentors and influences and his mission to improve music education.

“Every country in the world knows more about our music than we do,” he said. Such indigenous strains as blues, jazz and gospel are “the soul of our country. We cannot afford to let this legacy slip into obscurity.”

As homage to Jones’ work with Michael Jackson, Usher, sporting glittery red loafers, sang Rock With You.

Lou Adler, introduced by a Cheech & Chong skit that revived their stoner act, spoke about his early work with Jan and Dean, Carole King and the Mamas and the Papas, who “were coming off about 80 psychedelic trips” when he met
them.

The secret to becoming a successful producer?

“It helps to work with three of the best songwriters of all time: John Phillips, Carole King and Sam Cooke,” he said. He thanked his seven sons, “my best productions.”

Carole King paid homage to him with a rendition of So Far Away.

On 22 February we published an article about Journey guitarist Neal Schon and his fiancée Michaele Salahi, entitled ‘Exclusive: Journey guitarist Neal Schon left ex-wife and daughters “so broke they can’t buy food” .. but he gave Real Housewives of DC fiancée $1 MILLION ring’. It claimed falsely that Mr Schon was a deadbeat dad and repeated allegations that he had neglected his ex-wife and two young children, leaving them in such a precarious financial position that they have no money for food or bills and that their home would have to be sold. It also reported claims that Mr Schon was a “drunk and abusive man” who had become “increasingly spiteful and vindictive” using his money to bully his ex-wife and that his fiancée Michaele Salahi had turned him against his former wife. We accept that these allegations are untrue and apologise to Mr Schon, Ms Salahi and the family for any distress caused. We have agreed to pay Mr Schon and Michaele damages and legal costs.

The Daily Mail based its February 22, 2013 story on false and vicious statements against Neal Schon and Michaele Salahi that had been posted online by Judy Kozan, Schon’s former mother-in-law, on her personal blog.

Kozan made the posting just hours after Schon was victorious in a court case filed in January 2013 by Amber Schon, Kozan’s daughter, asking for an additional $2,700 in monthly support payments. A Minnesota judge ruled that Schon had met all of his child support obligations and noted that he had paid his ex-wife more than $1.3 million since their divorce in 2007. The judge even recommended (Amber Schon) should “get a job.”

As a result of the blog – and the subsequent media coverage it generated – Neal Schon filed a lawsuit against Judy Kozan in Minnesota federal court on March 18th, in an attempt to end the constant harassment to which he has been subjected, and for the damage that has been caused.

With respect to the Daily Mail’s apology and payment of damages, Neal and Michaele appreciate that these corrective actions have been taken, and will continue to ensure that journalistic integrity is maintained in regards to reports on their professional and personal lives.

Fans definitely called on Carly Rae Jepsen’s ‘Call Me Maybe,’ making it the most-streamed song and video in 2012.

Story Highlights

On mobile phones, 55% of consumers read artist and band Facebook posts and 53% “like” posts

Streaming sells music: 29% of consumers are likely to buy after hearing a stream

Teens spend six hours a week listening to music, one hour more than adults 18 and older

For music fans, a mobile phone doesn’t say, “Call me.” It says Call Me Maybe.

Carly Rae Jepsen’s viral hit is one example of how phones, social media and streaming have revolutionized music consumption.

With 119.8 million streams, Jepsen’s viral hit was the most streamed song and video of 2012. The singer has 5.6 million Twitter followers and 5.2 million “likes” on Facebook. A lot of those admirers connected with her via cellphones, a crucial social conduit between fan and artist, according to The Entertainment Consumer: State of the Media Report, to be issued by Nielsen next week.

Via phones, 55% of consumers read artist and band Facebook posts, 53% “like” posts, 30% comment on posts and 28% click on timelines. In the Twitterverse, 26% of fans read artist tweets and 14% retweet.

“It’s the entertainment portal,” says David Bakula, senior vice president of analytics at Nielsen Entertainment. “You’ve got a much more engaged consumer and many more opportunities for artists and fans to interact. Word of mouth used to be one-to-one. Now it’s one-to-many, where each fan becomes a micro-marketer.”

Streaming has proven effective as a promotional tool: 29% of consumers are likely to buy music after hearing a stream. Among sites, YouTube continues to clobber the competition with 129.3 million streams in 2012, up 1%; Pandora trails with 14.9 million streams, up 5.2%; and Spotify, gaining ground with a 91.2% spike, tallied 10.2 million streams.

YouTube’s slight growth doesn’t portend a plateau.

“I don’t foresee any flat-lining,” Bakula says. “We’ve seen nothing but acceleration and growth. YouTube has become a more popular consumption channel than radio.”

Other Nielsen findings:

One third of the U.S. population falls into a class of “entertainment aficionados,” an ethnically diverse group of consumers with an average household income of $63,000. They account for 78% of music sales and 70% of spending across all entertainment categories. The “low entertainment spender,” average income $53,000, listens to more music (6.1 hours a week vs. 4.3 hours for aficionados) but attends fewer live events (2.9 hours vs. 3.4 hours), not surprising given the steep cost of concert tickets.

Teens spend six hours a week listening to music, about one hour more than fans 18 and older.

Female Internet users 18 and older are more likely than men to buy physical and digital music.

Though physical CD sales fell 13.5% to 194 million albums, overall, music sales in 2012 rose 3.1% thanks to a 14.1% jump in digital albums (to 118 million copies) and a 5.1% increase in digital tracks (to 1.3 billion, the most downloads ever purchased in a single year).

Seeking to provide an unprecedented and intimate look into the history of the band and the legacy of its music, the Eagles partnered with Academy Award-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney (Taxi to the Dark Side, Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room) to produce the film. Directed by Alison Ellwood (Magic Trip: Ken Kesey’s Search for a Kool Place), History of the Eagles is a meticulous creation featuring rare archival material, concert footage, and never-before-seen home movies that explore the evolution and enduring popularity of one of the world’s biggest-selling and culturally significant American bands.

History of the Eagles made its television broadcast debut on Showtime last month, earning the network its highest ratings for a music documentary in eight years. Part One premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January to great acclaim.

History of the Eagles Part One dedicates two hours to the chronicling of the band’s creation and rise to fame in the 1970’s through its breakup in 1980. More than 25 new and exclusive interviews were conducted with all current band members — Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit – as well as former members Bernie Leadon, Randy Meisner and Don Felder. Also featured are new and exclusive interviews with Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, Kenny Rogers, Irving Azoff and many other seminal artists and band contemporaries who have been closely involved with the Eagles’ history.

While personal stories from band members, managers, and music industry luminaries frame the narrative, it’s the unexpected moments—recording sessions, backstage interactions, and even a whimsical sequence from the Desperado cover shoot—that convey the extraordinary bond linking the artists, their music, and the times (an era when country-tinged rock and finely-honed harmonies spoke to a nation still reeling from unrest).

Additionally, the documentary features previously unreleased home movies and archival footage. Personal photos, video and memorabilia amassed by the Eagles over the course of their career will also be seen for the very first time.

History of the Eagles Part Two reveals the personal and professional struggles members faced while the band was apart, and chronicles the group’s dramatic reunion in 1994, as well as its resurgence in recording and performing throughout the next two decades. Among the band’s many achievements since reforming are its triumphant Hell Freezes Over tour, the 2007 release of Long Road Out of Eden (which sold more than 5.5 million copies worldwide and earned two GRAMMY® Awards), and its ongoing ascendance as an international supergroup.

Eagles Live at the Capital Centre – March 1977 features previously unreleased concert performances of “Hotel California,” “New Kid In Town,” “Take It To The Limit,” “One Of These Nights,” “Lyin’ Eyes,” “Rocky Mountain Way,” “Best Of My Love” and “Take It Easy,” all captured during the band’s two-night stand in Washington, D.C. during its historic Hotel California world tour.

Directed by Alison Ellwood and produced by Alex Gibney, History of the Eagles was created with a select crew of filmmakers including: Blair Foster, Executive Producer; Alison Ellwood and Ben Sozanski, Editors; Karim Karmi, Co-Producer; and Erin Edeiken, Line Producer.

The Eagles have sold more than 120 million albums worldwide, earned five No. 1 U.S. singles and six GRAMMY® Awards. Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 is the best-selling album of all time, exceeding sales of 29 million units. The band’s Hotel California and Eagles Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 have sold more than 16 million and 11 million albums, respectively. The Eagles were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. For more information, visit the band’s website at www.eaglesband.com.
