Watch Rolling Stones Recall Writing ‘Honky Tonk Women’

Mick Jagger, Keith Richards talk Brazilian vacation that inspired ‘Let It Bleed’ classic in ‘Olé Olé Olé!: A Trip Across Latin America’

The Rolling StonesOlé Olé Olé!: A Trip Across Latin America, a concert film documenting the band’s 2016 trek through Latin America as well as their historic concert in Havana, Cuba, will come to movie theaters for one night only on December 12th.

Olé Olé Olé! captures the Rolling Stones both onstage and off, and in this exclusive clip, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards share a story about vacationing in Brazil in December 1968, a trip that resulted in the composition of Let It Bleed‘s “Honky Tonk Women.”

“Keith had this beginning to this ‘Honky Tonk Women’ song. We went off to this ranch which was a long way out of Sao Paulo,” Jagger says. “It was [the middle of nowhere]. But it was a big coffee plantation, and they very kindly lent us this ranch.”

Richards adds, “What do you do on a ranch and evening is coming up and you got a couple of guitars? Suddenly, Hank Williams came to mind, and maybe that’s retrospect or not. … I think we were kicking around old country songs.”

Jagger and Richards recall crafting the song alongside a Brazilian river. “I started getting into that one pump and Mick came up with ‘the bitch in Jackson,’ and we were off,” Richards says, adding that the titular “honky-tonk woman” was a friend of the band.

In addition to Olé Olé Olé!: A Trip Across Latin America, the one-night-only screening – co-presented by Eagle Rock Entertainment and Fathom Events – will also feature an exclusive introduction from the Rolling Stones as well as two full-length bonus performances from the Stones’ Argentinian show.

Tickets for Olé Olé Olé!: A Trip Across Latin America go on sale today at the Fathom site. The band recently screened Havana Moon: The Rolling Stones Live in Cuba, which concentrated entirely on that March 25th concert.
